How long is it?** A: The reviewers that have stated the PerfecDraw is too short to open a robusto all the way through have probably not watched or paid attention to the video instructions for use. The PerfecDraw was specifically designed to handle up to a Churchill size cigar (7") or even a double corona (7.5"). A robusto is typically only 5" long. The actual shaft of the PerfecDraw that can be inserted into the cigar is 4". The video instructions show to check the "cold draw" of your cigar before you light it up. If the draw is not open to EXACTLY your ideal preference (could be plugged, tight, snug or even "acceptable"), use the PerfecDraw to adjust or fine-tune the draw until it's absolutely ideal for your personal preference of draw resistance or openness. The vast majority of the time you'll only need to use the PerfecDraw within the first one inch of the head of the cigar. Won’t that let smoke out the side of the cigar?** A: I assume you're speaking of the photo of the PerfecDraw twisted into the very short nub of a cigar. That is called "nubbing" a cigar. Most cigar smokers discard the cigar when they've smoked it down to "the nub". Many cigars acquire a very strong, unacceptable taste by the time they're smoked down that short. And certainly it becomes difficult or even impossible to hold the nub when it's that short. So you just discard the nub. But sometimes that cigar is just so tasty that you want to smoke every little bit of it. So you use something called a "nubber" to poke into the side of the cigar (the nub) to hold the cigar instead of holding it with your fingers. When using the PerfecDraw to adjust the draw of a cigar, yes, you rotate it into the cigar and pull it straight out, which removes small bits of tobacco. This is not what you do when using the PerfecDraw as a nubber. You simply twist the PerfecDraw into the cigar, but you don't pull it out (until you're done smoking the nub). The longitudinal channels in the PerfecDraw "grab" onto the tobacco and prevent the nub from rotating around the PerfecDraw, and the PerfecDraw itself seals the hole. I worried about damaging the cigar. I would spin the tool like a drill and the gently spin it backwards as I pulled it back out. It was OK but not great as a way to improve the smoke.My friend also had purchased the tool. Together we figured out that you want to make a tunnel up the center of the cigar. So it is more like a pipe than having the smoke filter thru tightly packed tobacco leaves. So now I will firmly push the tool in while being careful that it is well centered. Then I spin but firmly pull back as I spin the tool to make that 'tunnel' I mentioned. I put the tool in all the way too. Plus when the tool is almost out of the cigar, I carefully keep spinning and pushing to be sure the tunnel entrance is round and clean - and that all the little tobacco bits that I loosened have been pulled out.
