I didn't know anything about audio before starting this project, so I didn't realize I would need phantom power. I also needed a splitter/4-pole adapter to get any of my devices to receive signal from it. I actually hooked it up and was talking into it, not realizing my iPhone was just using its built-in mic and sending "monitor" signal to the headphone jack where the mic was plugged in!So, here's my experience: my iPad wouldn't listen to it without the adapter. My iPhone wouldn't listen to it without the adapter. My Macbook wouldn't listen to it without the adapter. Once I got the adapter, all I got was a super annoying thu-thu-thu-thu-thu sound--not picking up any voice. But then when I got a Phantom Power supply, it all started working and sounded great. Since I accidentally did all those recordings with the built-in mic, I know: it's worth getting this microphone for way better sound!If you've read the sales page and thought, "Hm, phantom power not needed for all devices," (as I did), you can go the slow way and keep ordering pieces and waiting for them to come. But it seems that, if you're plugging this into a 3.5mm jack, you're probably going to need phantom power. Apparently the voltage delivered by those jacks does vary, but there's a good chance yours doesn't deliver 5V, let alone 48. I believe the devices they're talking about where you don't need it are pieces of audio equipment that deliver their own phantom power, like a pre-amp or mixer. (Seller, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that!)Aside from the sound, this microphone looks great and feels solid. Nothing about it seems cheap to me. I'm glad I bought it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Probably a great microphone, but lots of background static *by S***N on Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2017* The microphone has a lot of static. I forced myself to write a 4 star review because I suspect my laptop may somehow be responsible for the static, despite it being a pretty good laptop with a good sound card. I'm just not totally sure. From what I read, the culprit appears to lie with the 3.5mm jack connector the microphone comes with. Apparently this type of microphone jack will commonly produce static because it doesn't have the solid connection that other interfaces have. I tried using the free software Audacity, as well as the paid software, Adobe Audition, as an attempt to remove the static to no avail. The noise reduction features only caused my voice to sound distorted or having an echo. I removed all possible sound in my environment (turned off the A/C (I'm in Florida; it's hot in November), the ceiling fans, and any other white noise I could locate in my house), and the static had no change whatsoever. It's just a steady hiss. So, I don't know if it's the microphone, or the environment that causes the static, but I think I'm going to return the microphone because I've attempted to eliminate every possibility on my computer's end and there was no change whatsoever. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Didn't work without phantom power *by T***I on Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2017* **Updated**Just got this Mic yesterday (Earamble) and hooked it up straight to my PC Mic jack on the motherboard. Unfortunately it doesn't pick up my voice.. at all. Even when I yell at it. Purchased a phantom power to try it again which should be here tomorrow. Assuming that will fix it and I'll update this either way. If it doesn't ill have to return it. Part of it was a little loose when I got it so maybe it is just defective but ill find out when I try the phantom power.**Got my phantom power this morning, hooked it up and now the mic works great. Not defective at all, just didn't have enough power coming from my motherboard to get it going. It sounds substantially better with the phantom power. I will definitely be keeping this as it is a big upgrade from just using my headset mic, even just as a plug and play without any changes to any settings on my computer. I absolutely suggest getting a 48v phantom power supply with this microphone to be able to get a real sense of how it works.
