Because of the added rubber, they a) smell funny (but just needs some airing out for a minute and then they’re fine); b) are harder to stretch, but if you just use a little more muscle, it works just as well as normal ones; and c) are ugly so my daughters won’t steal and lose them, but no one looks that closely at ponytails so it’s just an added bonus, honestly.
