To my surprise, the back area of them both were cheap fabric black...not white nor pleather. I got this futon for my 15 y/o son since he consumed the last futon he had to the core! I have to admit when we received this futon we were all pleasantly surprised (including my son who persisted on keeping his old one because he was too attached to it!). This futon is slightly smaller than what he had which is nice since it makes his room larger and gives you all the benefits of comfort and becoming a bed.
