Don't try to get a large can or jar off a top shelf - experiment first and learn what you can/can't do. This Sammons Preston reacher is very sturdy. The Jaws open up 3.15 inches. It has a soft upper pad which is actually superior to the serrated pad, which is hard rubber and doesn't mold itself to the object you're trying to grab. There's no "play" in the claw, unlike every other reacher I've had. That gives me comfort knowing I'll have a good grip on whatever I'm picking up. And, I just checked, I can pick up both a quarter and a penny off the floor on the first try. It has a 1/4" magnet in the tip - compared to only 3/16" on all of the others. It's in the basement as a just in case. This Sammons is the same as was given me when I left hospital rehab after back surgery. It is the perfect length.
