The soft shape allows it to bend naturally with the contents and the neoprene pouch. Even in a larger pouch/pocket/bag, this TagVault prevents the AirTag from sliding around and potentially being lost; an AirTag's only the size of a quarter, and about as thick as three of them. LIke the Elago AirTag holders, this makes the very small AirTag less likely to slip into cracks or fall out. Also: if it drops on a hard surface, this may cushion the impact a bit (not guaranteed if it "falls butter side down"). Another benefit: in a slim cardholder wallet, the soft silicone "grips" to the adjacent credit card where a hard plastic insert would slide off, and potentially right out of the cardholder pocket. It doesn't make your wallet "thinner", and yes, it adds a bit of material, but the way it's designed eliminates the "bump" in my wallet and makes it more comfortable.
