There is no user guide that comes along with the scanner (most items don't anymore) and the user guide online isn't great, but there is a lot of information on line to supplement the information. Since this is my first photo scanner, I don't have anything to compare it to directly. The quality of the scanned photos is great, but the quality of the scanned negatives is AMAZING. I am scanning negatives that are 65 years old! They are as clear as day and the ICE "technology" seems to be working great. The downside is that this scanner only has ICE Light, which means that the "technology" to remove scratches only works when scanning negatives, not photos. This seems odd, since most scratches are going to occur on photos and not negatives, and most items to be scanned nowadays are going to be photos. It seems like any product that is manufactured from here on out should be with that in mind. This is the latest release of these scanners and has the most options, so it is really odd that it didn't have the latest technology. Review: Surprised and Impressed - I've tried other slide scanners in the past - several years ago - with disappointing results. When I stumbled across several dozens of 35mm slides from my late stepfather's stuff, I decided to give this one a try. I'm impressed and very satisfied with the results - it's a real good bang for your buck. Installation was painless using the quick start info and CD. I loaded some slides into the plastic insert and fired it up. First thing I did, was go to "Professional Mode" which provides a lot of options that will improve the quality of your scans. Primarily, increasing the DPI setting allows for larger images - setting at 2400 DPI produces images of about 3.5-5MB, and resolution of 3000. I also upped color depth to 48-bit color. It also slows down the scan time - I think 3-4 minutes for 4 at a time on my low end Dell. I uploaded several of the scanned images to Target and had a bunch printed for my mom. The printed results are Very Good in my opinion - close to excellent really when you consider many of these are from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s and allowing for imperfections from scratches and dust. Scanning at a high resolution allows for more printing options - I had one shot printed at 8x10 and 5x7. Yes, there are specks of dust (I didn't do any cleaning prior) - I cleaned up several scans using a smudge tool. I have not used any of the built in adjustment options such as unmask, dust removal or "digital ice". I prefer to scan them as raw files and use a real old copy of Paint Shop Pro 7 to manually adjust. I find tweaking the color balance, sometimes a sharpen and some brightness or gamma correction produces some very good results. Other photo tools provide these basic options too I think. Or you can use pro tools like Photoshop. I would recommend this scanner - for slides or negatives - to anyone who wants to save some old photos that can produce great results to preserve your memories. I don't think it has a 2-1/4 holder, but neither does an older scanner I have and it works fine.** A: It doesn't have a frame/holder for a mounted 2-1/4 format that I recall. However, there's no reason you couldn't just align it on the glass scanner bed. It does an excellent job of scanning mounted 35mm slides, so the fact that that the film is in a mount shouldn't make any difference. **Q: Can you place four 4x6 pictures on the scanner and have it scan to 4 image files automatically rather than doing them one at a time?** A: I disagree. You need to have .8-1.0" between each photo and 4-4x6 photos won't fit on the glass with those spaces. You can do 4 manually by selecting the scan area in "normal" mode, but that adds time. It's far easier to do 2 at a time and use "thumbnail" mode to automatically select the scan areas for each photo. It only takes 45-50 seconds to scan 2 at 600 dpi. **Q: Will this scanner work with Mac OS 10.9?** A: You can download Silverfast SE software, which is compatible with the latest Mac OS (Monterey) and with earlier versions going back to OS 10.13 (High Sierra). Software for earlier OS versions may exist, but you'll have to hunt for it. **Q: Can this scanner scan negatives in other sizes besides 35mm? I have many old negatives from my parents/grandparents (pre 1960) in a variety of sizes.** A: Yes, this scanner can scan negatives besides 35mm. It comes with a holder to neatly hold 35mm film, and it also comes with a holder to neatly hold 120 film (120 film is a medium format film, most common I'd say around the 1940s - 1960s, it's usually 6 cm wide, but the length of each individual shot can vary). It is *possible*, but not very easy, to scan other formats of film on here (such as 126 film or 110 film). The other scanners (one a dedicated and ... *by E***R on May 1, 2017* I have used several different scanners to archive my negative collection, and this one is the easiest to use, and creates great scans. The other scanners (one a dedicated and expensive film/slide scanner which didn't last very long) were slow or only scanned one image at a time. This one will scan up to twelve 35mm images and takes about 2 1-1/2 minutes per image at 6400 DPI (it should be less at lower DPI settings). It has the ability to scan medium format negatives and 35 mm slides, but I don't have any on those formats. The only problem I have encountered is that some of my negatives are very curled, and don't want to lay flat in the holder, and touch the glass which creates a slight rainbow effect at that spot in the scan. Small cross bars and a top plate that holds more securely would likely fix that problem. Overall I have scanned more than 1500 images without so much as a hiccup, and it is certainly worth the asking price if you want to archive your older negatives and slides.
