I frequently buy OEM parts from Jacks Small Engines for my lawn equipment, but with this mower being about 16 years old, there's no way I'm speculating on a $259 Kohler starter when I can get this one for about $50. Out of the box, the only difference between this one and the original is the outside metal case. The Kohler was 'spliced', whereas this one was one continuously rolled piece with no joint, if there is a weld, you can't see it. It bolted right in and low and behold- it cranked right up. It sounds much better and smother than the old one. Of note: this is a ten gear sprocket, same as original. Now, will it last as long as the OEM starter? If this it does, my heirs will have to update this review. But if this mower lasts five more years, I'd be amazed, because I have 2 acres and a TON of 60 year old pine roots everywhere, it's a rough ride! I just replaced the PTO switch last month, all the pulleys have been replaced, all bought right here on desertcart for a fraction of the price of OEM.
