It is an anti-drip valve to stop the nozzle from dripping and bleeding the line contents until the line is empty. They do not shut off unless the line pressure is turned off. **Q: Wondering if the spring is supposed to stay in the piece for some reason it won’t work with it in there** A: what type of system are you using? Working pressure is 140 psi to 1000 psi. You will not get that without an added pump. Within that range they should work fine with the spring. Every single one I installed has been working perfectly with no faults on the high-pressure system I'm using. Great value when the same ones at my local irritation store is charging almost $5 per nozzle.
