## Description

Product description MAKE International’s mission MAKE International is passionate about searching for fresh designers to collaborate with, bringing its customers a variety of distinctive products and designs they are looking for. MAKE looks to create items that are practical, high-quality, stylish, and above all, make people’s lives better. MAKE International’s history MAKE was established twelve years ago in 2005 by Director Dominic Speelman and joined forces with renowned ceramicist Keith Brymer Jones in 2008. Together the two have expanded the internationally successful Keith Brymer Jones ranges, in addition to growing MAKE’s brand portfolio to include Harlequin’s fresh brand Scion and upcoming designers Jane Foster and Becky Baur. There are many more exciting partnerships with contemporary design brands on the horizon too, including Layla Faye, Hokolo and Designer’s Guild. MAKE International manufacture products for all of the designers they work with. As Head of Design, Keith Brymer Jones personally collaborates with every designer that MAKE works with to create unique products that represent the style and story behind each brand perfectly. Keith’s experience stretches back over twenty years, having started as an apprentice at Harefield Pottery aged 18 before hand-making ceramics from his London studio for retailers including Conran, Heals, Habitat, Marks and Spencers, Ted Baker, Laura Ashley, Monsoon, Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys New York and Anthropology. Keith continues to throw every shape in all of the ceramic ranges produced by MAKE on his potter’s wheel at his studio, a converted bakery in Whitstable, Kent. He then works with MAKE’s expert product supervisors in China to sample the products on the factory floor to match the same high specifications as the pieces made at home in his studio. Quality is precedent and for this reason every item is checked at least three times once it is made in order to meet extremely high standards. MAKE International has distributors in Australia, Norway, The Faroe Islands, Iceland, Finland, Belgium, New Zealand, Denmark, Sweden, the US, Canada and the Netherlands and agents in Germany. MAKE is extremely proud of all the staff, designers, factories and distributors that they work with. How are the products made? Keith continues to throw every shape in all of the ceramic ranges produced by MAKE on his potter’s wheel at his studio, which is in a converted bakery in Whitstable, Kent. He then works with MAKE’s expert product supervisors in China to sample the products on the factory floor to match the same high specifications as the pieces made at home in his studio. Similarly, all of our non-ceramic product ranges, such as glass, textiles and haberdashery, are designed by Keith in collaboration with each range’s designer to ensure that they are both unique and high quality. Keith Brymer Jones The Word Range is a collection of super white porcelain ceramics which feature a colored, hand-stamped word in retro, typewriter font. The Word Range originates from Keith having dyslexia growing up and initially viewing words as shapes so considering them perfect as a design concept to decorate ceramics. The first word that Keith ever stamped on a ceramic was ‘Love’ as he thinks it’s the most important word however his favorite word is ‘hot’ as he likes its visual symmetry. The first item in the Word Range was the bucket mug which originated as a replication of the shape of the water bucket that Keith uses when throwing on his potter’s wheel. The bucket mug remains unchanged in over twenty years and has been joined by plenty more products. bowls, egg cups, plates, espresso cups and vases amongst many more. The Keith Brymer Jones Word Range is now a successful, award-winning brand which is distributed and sold in over forty countries and has a large, loyal following. In 2008, Keith met his business partner Dominic at a trade fair and joined Dominic’s business, MAKE International, as a Director and Head of Design. Keith set up a new studio, a converted bakery, in Whitstable in Kent where he still works today. MAKE International provided a platform for Keith to not only develop and expand his own Word Range and other KBJ ranges but also work collaboratively with other top British designers to add new brands to MAKE’s portfolio Designers like Scion and Jane Foster, amongst others, provide surface patterns whilst Keith designs the shape of the items. Every single prototype is still designed by Keith in his studio in Whitstable however he now takes the prototype to China to be mass produced. Keith has a team of fulltime staff employed by MAKE International who he visits twice year to work on the factory floor with and ensure that the products maintain the same stringent specification of his prototype. Keith is proud to manufacture responsibility in China and has made a fun video to let everyone know here. It is Keith’s dream to bring production home to the UK and, fingers crossed, this dream may not be so far away now!
