I immediately washed it by hand and hung it in the sun to dry for the day (it's white). It is so soft for sleeping on! Delightful! Of course you need tha zipper, elsewise your pillow could work itself out. I did not find the zipper to be any bother (I was afraid I might). But the best thing about this is the reason I bought it - waking up with hair that is so easy to comb out! It just is not in the usual morning knotted mess. What a surprise the first morning, and then to see it is the same every next morning. I comb it smooth before bed, and out in the morning it is still mostly as smooth as when I went to bed - as to knots, that is; I still have bed head and don't wake up looking looking lovely like a movie, but it is noticeably tamer than my usual morning look.Being nearly knot-free in the the morning is important to me because I have fine hair and I always have breakage in the back. I want this to stop so I can have smooth (semi) long hair all around. I realize I am hardest on my hair in the morning when I hurriedly pull out the nighttime knots when I brush, and I have let this become a habit, and that is probably why I have breakage back there. I was reading blogs on fine hair care and they all recommend the silk pillowcase.
