Some advantages of this is it protects the carpet and it keeps things from sliding around. One disadvantage is once again it keeps things from sliding around. For example if you put a suitcase of top of it and try to push or pull the suitcase it doesn't slide making it difficult to move the suitcase. I think I prefer stuff not sliding around though.
