The lower panel contains the flap opening which is 9.37 inches by 15 inches and accommodates small to medium sized pets that are not wider than nine inches from left to right shoulder. Would this work?** A: Yes. I think the 49" is the length of the packing when the door is not assembled. My door is 74" as well and it fits perfectly. We love it and so does our Chihuahua. **Q: My door measured 74 inches from lowest part of slider on top and bottom. Will this fit? We have a small park model home and I can't find one to fit.** A: I had it in a 96" door and it worked ok. Looked around at a lot of dog doors and was really leery about installing something permanent. This was easy to install all by myself and our dog learned how to go in and out very quickly. I am really impressed with its sturdiness. It fits snugly in the top, side and bottom track of the sliding door frame, and closing our sliding door holds it in place very well. Even though our dog is on the tall side, it has not moved out of position. And we can still use our patio door. This item is complete garbage - from materials, to construction, to design. I kid you not, you could do so much better going to Home Depot on your own and buying the materials to design and build your own custom door. It doesn't create any type of real seal, its flimsy, and the parts are cheap/not designed well/not glued or built to last and most certainly, definitely and absolutley nowhere near worth even $50.00 (let alone the asking price).
