Don't remember how long the screw part is but you can cut it short enough so the crew still fits the length when fully retracted.One thing to remember is that the cut must be flat enough so that the load on it is perpendicular or, I would think, the possibility of a rollover is possible especially since the base, the tube and top are not welded together. **Q: can these be used in pairs with a beam to support 3 or 4 joists at a time?** A: Absolutely. I have had engineers approve using these jacks to support beams over 12 feet long. You may have to reinforce your floor or use a 4x8x12 solid cement block to spread the weight load of the post. **Q: Would 2 be sufficient to support multiple joists with 2 - 8ft long 2x8's or would 3 be better?** A: Much of that depends on the load your going to be putting on the 2bys. I would do a minimum of 3. You should be able to tell if you need more by looking at any deflection in the 2bys if there is some you’ll need more. Are yoU using this as extra supports for joists? **Q: How are these used? I used a set years ago, but the top had a "nut" set to turn with a crescent wrench until tight, this appears round at top?** A: That looks different from mine which did have a nut to turn. FYI: it’s a 2 person job to install but fairly east to do. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A great solution for short problems! *by W***R on July 22, 2013* I used four of these to jack up an exterior wall that had been left improperly supported and was beginning to sag. At the tallest I had a space of 10-1/2", at the shortest it was 6-3/4". Based on advice I got here, I ordered them with the plan of sawing them off to custom lengths- 6-5/8" turned out to be the absolute minimum the pipe can be shortened without needing to saw off the screw post as well (and that would be no fun). I was hoping I had gotten good advice, and it turned out they were right. I was prepared to prime and paint where I had cut, but as it turned out the paint was not well adhered on mine, and a full repaint was going to be in order if I wanted decent rust protection. For the price they are sold at I think they are a bargain as is, but if you want to de-grease, prep and repaint, you will end up with a more durable product. If they won't be exposed to wet conditions, they should be fine as is.
