No spillage and function fine when used right after filling. If they sit around for a day, they will leak out and empty. I wanted these to help keep my small dogs from digging up my lawn. After reading of the problems, I got the set of 6 instead of 2 because of the "leak" warnings. All six hold water ok, so the extra dollar wasn't needed (but I still think was a worthwhile precaution).
