Great for camping, working in the yard, house, garage or office. The construction is solid from top to bottom. Yes, the case is plastic, but durable and meant to last just like an old school Walkman, I'm not scared that I'll drop it from a few feet and it will break right away. At low volume you can keep this on your desk at work and not disturb coworkers. At full volume you can (annoy your coworkers or) be across the yard or large room and still hear it just fine. Don't expect much bass - because that is not what this unit was designed for. This unit has one speaker, but it performs well. The tuning dial is exactly what you would expect from an analog station dial, it even has a slightest of give to it when you go one way or the other, and it allows a more precise fix on that hard to find signal. I have purchased several portable, antenna-less, digital signal radios, and if the signal is hard to lock onto they just give up and skip it. This radio lets me decide while I adjust the antenna. The headphone jack is well anchored, unlike some of the other portable radios and MP3 players I've purchased online. The sound is also good through headphones. Again, don't expect huge bass through headphones. This isn't designed for that, just enjoy your music. Antenna reception is awesome - THE ANTENNA IS OVER 18 INCHES LONG! Pros: 1. Well made, easy to use, pocket size, great reception, large antenna, reliable. The battery door is even hinged and attached to the unit so you won't lose it. 2. No useless battery draining features like an LED flashlight, poor quality Bluetooth connection, or hard to use buttons or confusing interface. Cons: 0. NONE so far and I don't think I'll find any. I wish more consumer electronics were built this well. Review: Retekess V117 - The Retekess V117 is quite a surprising little radio. I bought it to use as a bedside radio as I need music to help me sleep. I wanted something decent that would give good battery life. Digital displays are nice and convenient, but they drain the batteries faster. I expect good runtimes between battery changes because when this radio is turned off, it is completely off. It receives all of the FM stations that I would expect. AM is surprisingly sensitive and selective, pulling in signals from hundreds of miles away and separating stations that are 10 kHz apart. SW on this is sort of odd in that the range is 8 - 18 mHz. Too bad it is not 5 - 15 or 6 - 16 as it would be more practical. But I knew this going in. It's really a non-issue though as I have other receivers that cover full shortwave, some with single sideband. Sound quality is very good. This radio can fill a room with sound. The sound, sensitivity and selectivity are worth noting because this is a small radio that will fit in a coat pocket easily. ## Features - Portable AM FM SW radio; FM 87-108MHz; AM 522-1620KHz; SW 8-10MHz; compact size; 4.65oz weight; with lanyard; suitable for elderly to go for a walk - Good reception; pocket radio with 18.9-inch retractable rotating antenna; clear reception without drift - Loud volume; V117 with 2.24 inches; 8ohm; 0.5W speaker; clear and loud sound quality; and a 3.5mm headphone jack; easy to use in different scenarios - Operated by 2 AA battery; being used to receive important information when there is no power otherwise available; with our AM FM radio; your AA batteries will last for weeks - If you have a family member in an area where hurricanes are frequent; you can choose this battery radio as a gift; a battery-powered portable radio; you can receive AM FM SW broadcast messages nearby in an emergency ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B06XRTSRPL | | Additional Features | Note: only one power supply way that is powered by 2 AA batteries, not support AC plugs into the radio ,because no the power cord jack | | Antenna Location | Telescopic antenna can be extended to 48cm( max) | | Best Sellers Rank | #80,049 in Electronics ( See Top 100 in Electronics ) #165 in Portable Shortwave Radios | | Brand | Retekess | | Built-In Media | Owner's Manual | | Color | Black | | Compatible Devices | Headphone, Smartphone | | Connectivity Technology | power cable | | Customer Reviews | 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,292 Reviews | | Display Technology | LCD | | Display Type | default_no_selection_value | | Enclosure Material | ABS Plastic | | Frequency | 108 MHz | | Hardware Interface | 3.5mm Audio | | Item Dimensions L x W x H | 5.51"L x 3.54"W x 1.57"H | | Item Highlight | for Seniors, Transistor,Clear Dial, Best Reception, Easy Tuning | | Item Type Name | radio | | Item Weight | 0.13 kg | | Manufacturer | retekess | | Mfr Part Number | V-117 | | Model Number | FAUF9207A | | Number of Batteries | 2 AA batteries required. | | Number of Items | 1 | | Power Source | Battery Powered | | Product Dimensions | 5.51"L x 3.54"W x 1.57"H | | Radio Bands Supported | AM/FM/SW | | Speaker Maximum Output Power | 0.5 watts | | Special Feature | Note: only one power supply way that is powered by 2 AA batteries, not support AC plugs into the radio ,because no the power cord jack Special Feature Note: only one power supply way that is powered by 2 AA batteries, not support AC plugs into the radio ,because no the power cord jack See more | | Style Name | Portable | | Tuner Technology | AM/FM/SW | | Tuner Type | AM/FM/SW | | UPC | 714559956632 714559983690 | | Voltage | 220 volts | | Warranty Description | Warranty, Labor:Simple and Convenient return process: We provide 1 year warranty and 30 days no reason to return. 1 Year warranty for radio body, 2 month warranty for accessories Beyond the warranty period: We still offer maintain service, buyers are required to afford corresponding cost. Battiers good.** A: Mine has since Oct 24 when I received it. I bought a new packet of batteries even to insure having fully charged batteries. This is very frustrating. It is a nice radio when it works. Sometimes it will stay on for 5 minutes and other times 20 seconds. I have run it on USB port successfully for about 15 minutes and then it will shut off. I wish I could get my money back. I like the design and features and hung in there till now, but am getting ready to just set it aside and by an analog SONY that I know will work. **Q: How long do the batteries last before needing to be replaced?** A: Depends on how long you play the radio. I haven't replaced my batteries since I bought the radio in April 2018. **Q: Do you need a shortwave antenna and can it be installed on this radio??** A: Dear customer, Thanks for your questions. For this Retekess V117 AM FM SW radio, it doesn’t need a shortwave antenna and I’m sorry to tell you that it can’t be connected to an external antenna. Hope it can help you. If it doesn't help, you may go to the product page, find the "Sold by Retevis Direct" under "Add to Cart" on the right side of the product page, click on “Retevis Direct”, then click the button "Ask a question" to reach out to us, we are always here for you. Best regards Angela **Q: What size batteries doesn't this radio use?** A: It doesn't use AA, AAA, 9 volt, or hearing aid batteries! ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Mighty Sound, Great Device *by J***N on June 8, 2018* This is a great little portable radio. This Retekess V117 is about the same size as my Sangean SR-35 and trusty Sony ICF-S10MK2 (now discontinued). It's about as sensitive as the Sangean and picks up more stations than the Sony. It also includes shortwave, though I have dedicated SW radios (including a C.Crane Skywave) I would use before this one. Here's what I like about the Retekess: -The side-mounted tuning dial is far better than Sony and Sangean's submerged wheel. -The sound is pretty powerful for such a small set. It's a little brighter than the Sangean, which is better for some kinds of music than others. It's excellent for talk, however. I'm a huge fan of the Sangean, but this Retekess is a worthy rival. -The antenna is long and relatively sturdy. -It stands up nicely, partly due to the horizontal form factor (unlike the Sony and Sangean, which are taller than they are wide). There's also a little kickstand in the back, so it can lay back at an angle. What I don't like: -The sound through headphones or earbuds is terrible. You do get sound in both ears, unlike the Sony, although it's not FM stereo, so far as I can tell. The Sangean isn't that great through headphones, either, but it's better than this. If you're going to do a lot of headphone listening, I'd go for the C.Crane Pocket - it's three times the price but sounds fantastic. To sum up, the Retekess V117 is worth $20. I have a soft spot for the Sangean SR-35, which costs about the same, but if the Retekess appeals, I don't think you'll be disappointed. ## Frequently Bought Together - Retekess V117 Portable Radios AM FM, Shortwave Radio with Clear Dial, Transistor Radio with Best Reception for Seniors (Black) - Retekess TR604 AM FM Radio,Portable Radio Plug in Wall,D Battery Operated,Large Dial,High/Low Tone Mode,Big Speaker,Earphone Jack, for Home,Picnic,Senior - PRUNUS J-166 Portable Radio AM FM, Battery Operated Radio with Tuning Light, Back Clip, Excellent Reception, AM FM Radios Portable, Transistor Radios --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.tn/products/44257074-retekess-v117-portable-radios-am-fm-shortwave-radio-black](https://www.desertcart.tn/products/44257074-retekess-v117-portable-radios-am-fm-shortwave-radio-black) --- *Product available on Desertcart Tunisia* *Store origin: TN* *Last updated: 2026-10-04*
