As the book explains the cards, this review needs to look at both.Firstly, you can manage with just the cards and the little white book that comes with them; this book however goes into much greater detail without repeating a lot of info from the booklet that comes with the deck. Illustrations are in black and white, but you should have the cards if you have the book. This is one book that doesn't stand alone, because the cards are pretty different from a standard tarot. It is paperback, which is nice because it doesn't become crazy expensive to get the info you need to use the deck effectively. There are chapters on tarot history and on other oracles, they are pertinent and interesting but are not the gist of the book... that would be the explanations of the cards, which gets to be very handy as there is some deviation from tradition (most notable is that the court cards are Child, Man, Woman, Sage-- hard to make them fit into other tarot systems). Each card has it's tarot name a keyword for it's meaning, and artwork that is completely unique and highly detailed.I use these cards for divination because they have a much more positive approach to meanings; it isn't all sunshine and lollipops but it does give a view that incudes (generally) a way to see things in the best possible light. The photo montage artwork can be studied for hours on end-- there is that much to see (BUT-- to see it you need to buy the cards; the b & w illustrations in the book are no substitute for the real thing).The Voyager system is meant for divination primarily, but has plenty of symbolism from a wide variety of disciplines. The cards are large (about the size of the large Crowley deck) and may be difficult to shuffle (try an overhand shuffle, or mix the cards in a bag) but it is worth the effort.
