By mid-December I noticed a little rust forming on the β€œstainless” steel. I was out of town for a couple of weeks and came back last week to find that the rust was not only on the top of the ring, but was also on the bottom and was leaving a stain on the porcelain. These have a perforated metal bottom, NOT a wire mesh, and this gets over all the problems which were detailed below.Let me say that I do not retract a single word of my original negative review. The 'type 1' strainers were and are absolute garbage, IMHO. However, the type 2 (non-mesh) strainers are absolutely fine. The idea of a drain strainer is that it catches stuff, so you are supposed to be able to empty them out, no? Well. the wire wrapping where the mesh joins the collar is so shoddy that it's got sharp pieces of wire sticking out (yes, on BOTH of them), it's going to be impossible to clean them out without roughing up your fingers. If I thought it was worth returning them, then they would be on their way back to Amazon right now. In the shower, the drains were backed up with water as the gunk, dirt and body hair collected in the drain. They will catch the tiniest of hair, and other dirt and scum.
