They are loud, BUT it is only loud enough to be an attention-getter. If you point the speaker at the attacker and hold it that way within 2 or 3 feet of the attacker, it would make their head throb and ears hurt, but other than pointing it at them from close range, it's just a loud notification. I asked my wife to let me know how much she is able to hear from inside when I activated it by my car in front of the house (about 30ft away from the house), and she said she definitely heard it but only because she was listening for it, and that it most likely would not have gotten her attention normally. She said the volume is similar to a car alarm from her perspective, inside the house. Better than nothing, but not quite what I'm looking for.
