Review: Excellent mobile broadband router - I did a lot of research before buying the TP-Link router to replace an older unit (from a different manufacturer), which was past its best and causing connectivity issues. The first thing to say about the TP-Link is how compact and stylish it looks compared to most. It won't draw your eyes, but if you do look at it, you'll like its clean lines and profile. It doesn't weigh very much, but it feels quite sturdy and safe while sitting on a narrow shelf when it is in operation. Setting it up was incredibly easy. In fact, after installing the SIM card, it more or less set itself up after powering it on. It took me longer to think up a secure password for the wi-fi than it did to get the unit up and running. In use it works quite unobtrusively. The indicator lights on the front panel are quite small so they don't distract you. It performs very well in terms of 5G mobile signal capture and throughput of data. I am using it currently for live-streaming and the performance has been very stable and consistent so far. The wi-fi network generated by the router has a fairly long range inside what is a challenging building environment. Overall I am very impressed by this TP-Link router and I would happily recommend it to anyone else who might be considering buying it.
Review: Affordable and great! - I'd suffered and endured the dubious Virgin Media "Superhub" long enough. I decided I'd try a new router after reading all the similar problems on the Virgin Media forums. I didn't want to spend too much money, so reading the generally positive reviews of this router, and that others had even used it for the same reason, I went for it. Setting it up was incredibly simple, although I have had previous experience. But honestly the hardest part was probably setting the old VM box to "Modem" mode.. Anyway! Afterwards I wired in this new router, logged on to it wirelessly, went into its admin menu, clicked the automatic setup wizard and.... Bosh. Done! I didn't bother with the enclosed CD, I guess it would've installed unnecessary gunk on my PC, I have no idea what's on it. So setup took literally a couple of minutes, including untangling wires. Really easy. Performance has been fantastic. I immediately noticed a dramatic improvement over the old VM box. Before I'd have to click on a link on my wirelessly connected PC, and wait. Then perhaps click again. Same with all other devices. It was like the router just wasn't bothering to connect to the internet. Now it works properly. Ping and download speeds are epic. Before the ping could be pretty high, and download speeds could sometimes be fast, but somewhat variable and inconsistent. Now downloads are fast and rock steady. We have an xbox hooked up via wireless, in a bedroom the opposite end of the flat (It's a late 70s build with some pretty thick concrete walls to get through). It used to hover around the 1 bar of signal on the xbox "Find Wireless" section. Now it hovers around the Maximum point, occasionally dropping only by 1 bar. Playing games had gotten to the impossible point, and party chat was a stuttering mess of choppy voices and impossible to understand. Now, perfect. So signal is strong and very dependable. I stream media to a wireless radio, xbox etc. Worked perfectly out of the box. My wireless printer that had seemed very temperamental before is now fully co-operating. I read a couple of reviews where people said they had to reset... Mines been on permanently for a few weeks now without a single issue. I did ensure that I had the latest firmware on the TP-Link website, turns out it already had it installed. Maybe that helps? Anyway its behaved perfectly for me. So overall I rate this a fantastic router for my pretty basic needs. £20 for this is a bargain. It made my Virgin Media internet work how it was supposed to be. How Virgin who had such a fantastic reputation for speed could then couple that with such a poor piece of equipment is unbelievable. But this solves it. It's just a shame that I have to keep my stupid, large "Superhub" hooked up in modem mode alongside this great router. Buy it. It's great.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can people give me an idea how much data people are using per month for an average household?**
A: 4 people who stream music and TV, ABC 1 home worker, we do about 300 gb a month.

**Q: Hi, does it have good wifi range, thanks.**
A: It is decent. It will puch through about 3 concrete walls with a decent signal after. Could possibly go further. It can also punch through thick concrete floors.

**Q: Can anyone confirm that this 4G router definitely has an external antenna socket, and what type of plug it takes, thanks.**
A: Yes it does.

5m of HDR400 cable is a myth. If your antenna is 9dBi or less, 5m is good advice, as you get 0.5 dbm lost per metre of cable. If you use a stronger antenna (it because even more directional, so harder to set up DIY style), say at 18 dBi or more you can use 10m of cable easily. If you use HDR400 cable (0.2dbi/m) loss you can have it even longer.

**Q: Hi! does this have any way for monitoring data usage on a daily basis? eg. not more than 1gb per day or free surfing at night?**
A: Hi Marco, yes you can log into the modem admin area to check usage and speed of upload/download on an iPad or laptop connected to the modems wifi network. You can set a data limit. Hope that helps. M

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Initial impressions are good!
*by R***R on 30 April 2026*

I have recently been experiencing some issues with my Netgear Nighthawk Pro 6 and Pro 7 units so I purchased the NX500 to evaluate either as a replacement or as an alternative. I have only done limited testing at home so far but will be travelling soon and will take it with me to provide in-room connectivity at the hotel. The unit is plastic and reasonably light. It’s perhaps unfair to say it feels cheap but it certainly does not feel substantial. I have left it powered for several days and it has remained cool to the touch with no hotspots. It is passively cooled and thus completely silent. Keep in mind it is mains powered rather than battery. I am using an EE 5G SIM for testing. Initial configuration was trivial although I have generally simply used default values so far. TP-Link registration and app installation went smoothly. I have not yet attached external antennas. In addition to Wi-Fi it offers 3 RJ45 ports which might eliminate the need to use a switch in most situations. Bear in mind I am intending mainly to use this unit to provide in-room services rather than being attached to my home network. In the event of a broadband outage it might be sufficient to provide temporary connectivity of course. Further testing to follow but initial impressions are good and I certainly have not found any showstoppers. If you are looking for a reasonable 5G modem / router / access-point then you should put the NX500 on your shortlist.
