Review: Excellent speaker with good low end and clarity - This is an excellent Bluetooth speaker if you are looking for a Bose-type replacement at a great price. I had the original generation Bose SoundLink, but it became a paperweight due to the battery no longer holding charge (and not working off a cable either). This Earfun UBoom L has a similar sound profile at lower volumes, offers great Bluetooth connectivity, and has clear, believable sound listening in small spaces or at low or moderate volumes. I'm not a sound engineer or audio expert, but from my interest in stereo and guitar equipment, I became aware of something called the Fletcher-Munson Effect. Basically, the human ear is more sensitive to mid-range frequencies (roughly between 2kHz and 5kHz). This means that lower volumes, the sound you are perceive will seem to have less bass than if the same EQ were applied at a louder volume. As a result, manufacturers of small-format speakers figured out that you need to boost certain frequencies at low volumes and generally reshape the EQ for your ears to perceive what would be a "flat" setting at a louder volume. Bose was a pioneer in popularizing this concept, but it's widely used in all types of affordable Bluetooth speakers, and the UBoom L is a great example of that. It sounds great out of the box, but with a phone app, you can apply special indoor and outdoor EQ settings from a sound engineer named "Oluv". If you're like me and frequently use Bluetooth speakers to play background music at very low volumes (while working, studying, or just for general ambience), then you'll appreciate this. There was a whole "Beats vs. Bose" thing about 15 years ago where people became obsessed with having as much bass as possible. Similar to a Bose unit, the UBoom L has plenty of low end, but with the Oluv EQ, it retains clarity and does not overwhelm the other frequencies. I will say that there is plenty of low end in this speaker, and there are presets and custom EQ's you can play with if you prefer a bassier sound. The internal battery charges with a USB-C cable, and I appreciated that they included an AUX jack. Some of these speakers are great to use with other audio equipment and instruments that either do not have Bluetooth, or would suffer from latency. There are plenty of great budget and premium Bluetooth speaker options nowadays, but this is a great all-around product. UPDATE (08/20/25): Need to make a slight correction to my review above - the UBoom L has a significant latency (audio delay between input and sound playing through speaker) when using the AUX 3.5mm jack. Apparently, this is a common issue not just with the Earfun units, specifically, but with most Bluetooth speakers that use any type of digital processing or EQ to produce sound. The latency is significant - around 250 milliseconds, I believe - which is far too large to use it effectively to play sound from any instrument. However, since this is a very "niche" use of this otherwise excellent Bluetooth speaker, I am not downgrading my review score.
Review: Reigns As The Best Value Speaker In It’s Class A+ - There seems to be some mixed reviews on this $50 speaker (on Prime Day Special), but considering everything, it far exceeds other sneakers of its size, price in my opinion. For reference, I’m no audiophile but have a hobby in collecting/finding the best quality Bluetooth speakers as I love music. I bought a $150 Bose Flex 2 Soundlink as well to compare (as they’re similar in size) and while they have different sound signatures, the Earfun seems to have a more comprehensive, balanced, full sound that I prefer (after downloading the app and setting the speaker to Oluv’s EQ tuning). Initially out of the box, the speaker sounded decent (but agree with other reviews, slightly muddy) but it wasn’t until getting the app and applying Oluv’s EQ preset until the speaker really shined. The separation between the highs, mids, lows, punchy yet tight bass came through when comparing various genres. I was somewhat doubtful and hesitant initially about the hype & when purchasing said to myself “if it’s not that good then I’ll just return it and keep the Bose” but after some initial testing will be happily keeping this Earfun and saving myself the $100 & returning the Bose :) of course, there will be some subjective taste/preference and some may prefer Bose’s signature sound but after comparison Bose’s sound seems more compressed, artificial vs Earfun comes through more naturally, full and wide. No connectivity issues for me so far, speaker pairs well and the Bluetooth connection is stable. Hopefully this review is helpful on your decision and if anything, $50 for this speaker is an absolute deal! Cheers As a side reference, based on my personal Bluetooth speaker journey I’ve come to keep: -for the best compact speaker, the Tribit Stormbox Micro -the best portable speaker with insane bass response, Harmon Kardon Onyx -most clear/open sound stage, the B&O Beosound -best value well rounded compact speaker, the Earfun Uboom L :)

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Why is you tube sound not playing through the speaker?**
A: What phone are you using. Mine works fine. I’m just having quality control issues with mine. The fabric is fraying. I’m going to exchange it for another one.

**Q: I just received mine, has anyone experienced any clipping sound issues ?**
A: I have two bought at different times and have not had any issues at all. Is the clipping all the time or only when playing loud? Try a different device and different source for your music. I have been using Tidal without any issues and the high res files sound great.

**Q: First time using my speaker. I turn it on and it turns right off. I cant find any answers in the manual. Any ideas?**
A: Did you charge it before using. The Directions tell you to do so. you will see four lights together when fully charged, If It doesn't change send it back

**Q: How is this compared to Ultimate Ears WonderBoom 3 WRT balanced neutral sound quality?**
A: I don't know about your speakers, but the sound quality is A1. I have a flat speakers to go in my studio and they are flat. The frequency is on paper. However the bass is not very good. They lack bass.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Speaker with versatile Indoor/Outdoor tuning. Tuned by Oluv.
*by S***R on July 12, 2022*

EDIT: I’ve slightly updated this review, because I ended up purchasing another speaker for stereo sound. I own two of the original UBOOM’s. This new larger UBOOM L has a different form factor and sounds much better tuned by Oluv. Keep in mind everyone’s ear is different. My ear wants bass, but I don’t want bass that is boomy and that takes away from overall clarity. Oluv’s tuning does two things in my opinion. Indoor Mode allows you to listen in your home and even at very low levels. You won’t disturb your neighbors in an apartment setting and you can still enjoy full and balanced sound at lower volume settings. The bass is there, but it’s not boomy bass. Maybe a bass head won’t like that? Personally, I’m not a fan of boomy bass that overwhelms the clarity of the music. If you want a little more bass, Outdoor Mode is the way to go. There’s more bass in that mode, but still tuned so it doesn’t overwhelm everything. Oluv gave people choices here, which I like. I see myself using both modes, when it’s appropriate in my environment and still have balanced tuning either way at any volume level. I ended up purchasing two of these speakers for stereo sound. There’s plenty of volume with one speaker, but the L/R stereo separation playing two together is so worth it in my opinion. Overall this an excellent speaker, at a great price point. The UBOOM L gives you the performance and sound of much more costly speakers. There are plenty of Bluetooth speakers released without much thought to tuning. Some have too much bass and others too much treble. This tuning is balanced and neutral. I like that Oluv collaborated with Earfun. I hope he does more of this in the future. In regards to the firmware. It can be found at Earfun’s website under Support/Product Guides, then click on UBOOM L. Just download the media product tool, firmware and instructions. It’s pretty straightforward. Just make sure you have a USB-C data cable. Less than a minute to run the update. After the update, forget the device in your Bluetooth settings and reconnect. I’ve attached photos and a video clip of the speakers connected in Stereo playing a track from the Spotify playlist of NCS/NoCopyrightSounds. They’re playing in Indoor Mode. Please use your headphone’s or ear bud’s to listen. (If you listen with a mobile device or tablet, you won’t get the full effect). You can hear the combination of clarity, bass and stereo separation in the video. I hope this video helps. I would definitely recommend giving this speaker a try.
