Spindle bearing cover 532172516 attaches above the mow ball bearing to prevent dust and debris from entering the upper bearing. . To ensure this part goes with your machine you should always go by the model number and serial number, which is normally found under the seat of your riding mower. If you have a John Deere, the model number is on the side of the tractor, and will also be printed on an identification tag located below the operator's seat or on the back of the lower frame between the rear wheels. The serial number (PIN) is 13 or 17 digits long. The original Craftsman Mowball assembly on my model featured a bearing especially machined to fit on the end of the shaft which has 2 flat sides, but that part is no longer available. Also, above the original mowball bearing was a tough plastic flange bearing cover. The original type parts are no longer available, so this part is necessary in order to replace the mowball (with installed bearing). This is a tempered steel part, and the bore on this part has parallel flat sides to fit perfectly on the shaft (install it flange side up), and the new mowball slips on, and finish up by torquing the bolt and washer tight. I made sure to clean everything good with a wire brush and solvent, and applied some good quality grease on the parts before assembling. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than New *by P***K on Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2016* Bought my mower new about 15 years ago and was delighted with it. Time and use took its toll and I replaced the mower ball with what I now know was an inferior part. Two mowing seasons later I've had to replace it again, This time I got an original ball but discovered there is a new installation method using newly designed parts. This bearing cover and related parts are better, in my opinion, than the earlier design. Assembly is easy and the end result great. I did put the bearing cover in upside down at first and found the screw too short to complete the assembly. A quick reverse of the bearing cover, a few turns of the wrench, and I'm good for another 10 years. This is a quick and inexpensive repair with a quality part.
