The mango normally weighs 350 grams and above and rich in red colour. Miyazaki variety is originally from the Irwin mango variety. They have more sugar content, 15%, than normal variety mangoes. History of Miyazaki Mango The history of Miyazaki mango trails from the late 1980s. It was first introduced in the city of Miyazaki, Japan. In 1985, two farmers began to harvest Miyazaki mango and following the year eight more farmers joined. But dark spots on the mango and not that much great flavour gave them a headache. The sub-tropical climate of the city favours the growth, taste and colour of the fruit. The normal harvesting time is between April and August. Egg of the Sun In Japanese, the variety is called Taiyo no Tamago (Egg of the Sun), due to its peculiar shape and colour. The mango’s shape is like an egg and the colour is bright red colour. The mango is non-fibrous and has delicate flesh. When the mango is raw it will be purple coloured and when ripens, it will change the flaming red colour. Why Miyazaki mango is so expensive? Apart from the mango’s traits, there are certain rules and regulations that farmers follow. To maintain all these features, these mangoes are grown in particular growing conditions. They need abundant sunlight as well as rain, which make the Miyazaki city apt for the mango variety to grow because of its sub-tropical climate. To get equal rich red colour all around the mango, they lay kinds of reflective sheets on the soil, so, when the sunlight falls on the sheet it would reflect on the downside of the mango. They are also doing net harvesting. It’s a method of applying a net around every mango. This helps mangoes from damaging after falling from the tree when it ripens. This also helps mangoes to fully ripen. After harvesting, farmers once again check the weight and taste of the mango. Mangoes that are under 350 grams and does not have the proper colour and sugar content are omitted from the open and international market.
