Who is Yoko Shimomura? Read this well-constructed, well-organized short book to find out. Why is 1948 important? Well, that's the year I was born. In addition to that world-shaking event (not), though, I was amused to find out it was the only year in the book given not one but THREE key historical highpoints (me not included). Each section is short, interesting, and very readable. A number of illustrations are used to good effect. Overall, this is an excellent summation of key happenings and people (some famous, others not so obvious) contributing to making the world we live in. This is a great book for kids (and even adults looking back on their birthdays) to read, giving a real appreciation of the gigantic struggles and upheavals upon which present society stands. Bravo! Review: Very Informative! - This book is a well-written collection of 55 episodes about civilizations, people, inventions, and important world history and cultural events. The episodes are short and concise and start from the early times to modern-day ones. Each topic can stand alone, so the reader from the Table of Contents could pick topics of interest rather than reading straight through if desired. Illustrations at the beginning of each chapter add interest. I liked how each episode started with a similar scenario to which the reader could relate. There was also an appropriate “moral” after each story about such things as the value of perseverance, or don’t believe everything you hear or read. There is an extensive list of references at the end, which readers can access for further reading about a topic. My only criticism would be that the age range shown for this book is 6 to 18 years. The text's vocabulary is at a much higher level than what a six-year-old could understand. Some words are explained in the reading, but many others are not. Some examples are: intermediary, aristocrat, siege, and debatable from one chapter. A glossary of terms would be helpful. This book takes key moments from history and packages them into easily digestible chunks, which means you get a broad covering of the whole of history which is something that is often missing from history teaching in school, where the focus will be in depth on one period. The downside is, of course that the information is glossed over. The author states at the beginning that there are "at least 55 events that changed the world," and in reality, there are many more than 55 events - once you start looking at any subject in depth, you realise that the world changes from a complex interaction of many different factors that can't be covered in a couple of pages.
