Review: An impressive book featuring modern Clevelands. - This is one of the newest books available that exclusively covers the Ford 335 Series of Small Block Ford V-8’s which includes the legendary 351 Cleveland along with the basic emissions restricted 351-M and the largest factory cubic inch displacement engine based on the 351-C and with loads of performance potential from the aftermarket, the Ford 400. During my 40 years of involvement with competition Clevelands I’ve read many publications about the 351-C. Most of them generally covered the factory performance Clevelands with production statistics and part numbers with an occasional performance build using aftermarket parts. This publication is from S-A Design as part of their excellent “Performance How To” series and in my opinion, the very best available. The well known author George Reid calls upon his decades of Ford performance experience and shares it in this book. It covers Building Basics in Chapter 1 and with each sequential chapter, it progressively gets more detailed with essential technical information about each component or sub-system of components specific to Cleveland engines. The more involved technical details are presented in an easy to follow way that’s suitable for novice and experienced builders alike. Factory part numbers and descriptions are provided for components that can be used in performance builds without the unnecessary clutter of undesirable parts. Naturally there’s plenty of information provided about the latest aftermarket performance components for Clevelands ranging from alloy cylinder heads to modern blocks that look almost identical to the original production blocks but without the technical problems found back in the seventies when using them in 10,000 rpm Pro Stock builds. Stroker rotating assemblies are also discussed briefly including details about the recommended “safe” limitations of cylinder overbores when using the standard production blocks featuring the “thin wall” casting design that was used for producing lighter blocks from the Cleveland foundry. Aftermarket American production blocks are also mentioned for the ultimate Cleveland Small Block builds. With names like “Titus” and “Track Boss”, these blocks are available in special iron alloy or aluminum and builds featuring the newest alloy Cleveland heads that are also discussed in the book, Small Block Clevelands with close to 500 cubic inch capacity are now possible when used with the components currently available. This Ford 351 Cleveland Engines book was printed in 2013 and the information it provides is still very fresh and current. Chapter 11 titled Power Builds is the final chapter. It features the wealth of information contained in this book and puts it to good use with six professionals building 351C and 400 engines conservatively for street use on available U.S. pump gasoline. Despite the fact that a couple of these builders have assembled Clevelands that have exceeded the 1000 horsepower level in naturally aspirated builds without power adders, the dyno tests published in this book are listed as 400 horsepower, 500 horsepower and 600 horsepower. The 600 hp build is a nice streetable 408 Cleveland stroker that spun the Dyno to 675 horsepower at 7000 rpm’s and 571 pounds of torque at 5000 rpm’s. The Ford 400 was never intended to be a performance engine as produced by Ford. It’s commonly referred to as a “boat anchor” and gets very little respect. But with a stock bottom end rebuild using forged Cleveland pistons and upgraded heads, intake manifold and carburetor, this particular 400 boat anchor managed an impressive 568 hp and 542 pounds of torque on the dyno ! Checkout all of the builds in this very detailed Cleveland engine book by S-A Design. I’ve included a couple of photos of my Cleveland in the ‘70 Mach 1 and a couple more from my copy of this impressive book.
