Review: Small, verstatile contact relay - I had the ubiquitous Linear FS20Z-1 Z-Wave contact fixture module installed in my front wall for many years to automate the lights on top of the wall. After about ten years the module went kaput and seems to no longer be available. The Zooz 700 Series Z-Wave Plus Smart Relay does everything the FS20Z-1 did in a much smaller package, making it far easier to embed in the outlet box without working too hard to fit in all the wires. While this module is not rated for outdoor use the box is weather-insulated, and I further wrapped the Smart Relay in a sandwich bag sealed with duct tape, so I'm quite confident no moisture will enter. Temperatures are mild enough here in Silicon Valley that it should also almost always be within the operating range (32F - 104F). It paired easily with my SmartThings hub (V2) and works as expected. Note that I'm not using the switch contact, I'm only controlling it via Z-Wave, so I can't comment on that feature, but I have no reason to think it wouldn't work as expected.
Review: Better than advertised - The "Zooz 700 Series Z-Wave Plus Smart Relay ZEN51" works great in non-dimming lighting applications. Like they said, you can install it at the light fixture, which is exactly what I did, there was no neutral at the switch location. It is quite tiny but nevertheless you'll want to use Wago connectors--BTW cheaper in bulk right here on desertcart. What made it "better than advertised" is that the switch controlling the light fixture still works properly. Automation will turn the light on or off regardless of the original wall switch, but the switch can still change the fixture on or off. If the switch is off and the light was turned on by automation, flipping the switch on doesn't change the light; it's not illogical. Of course you can setup annoying automation to change the light to a predetermined state whenever the switch is flipped, I suppose that's good for April Fools or whatever. For us, it's a very easy one-time override for the automation schedule. Our Z-Wave hub setup is Home Assistant running on a Raspberry Pi 4 with an Aeotec Z-Stick 7 Plus. This open source hub but not complicated, I imagine the relay works easily with other Z-Wave hubs. Adding the ZEN51 required only a Z-Wave JS inclusion, it was instantly detected. My big problem now is that I need to resist buying a bunch of these causing automation overload!

## Features

- SMART RELAY FOR ON/OFF CONTROL: Install this relay to add Z-Wave to the existing wall switch and keep your favorite switch style and color. The relay output is dry contact for your unique applications outside of lighting but note the input (switch) requires 120 V which makes it perfect for 120 V signal monitoring on sump pumps or motion lights. For a dry contact input device, look up ZEN16.
- 3-WAY COMPATIBLE: Unlike many other smart relays, you can use this device to automate 3-way set-ups as well. Even if you don't have neutral available at any of the switch boxes, you can always install this relay at the light fixture where you'll have access to power and neutral. Always follow the wiring diagrams carefully and make any programming changes if needed when installing this relay.
- EASY INSTALLATION: Pigtail wires for convenient connections. Connect to mechanical on/off or momentary switches only (NO dimmers or electronic / smart switches). The relay is small enough to fit in the most crowded box, just 1.5" x 1.4" and 0.7" deep. NEUTRAL WIRE REQUIRED (check before buying). The device is ETL certified and conforms with North American safety standards.
- SMART BULB MODE AND MORE: Bring back the switch function to your old switches even when using smart bulbs. The smart bulb mode allows you to control smart bulbs via Z-Wave without cutting power to them when off. Enjoy the new 700 series Z-Wave with powerful features like Z-Wave Long Range, SmartStart, and S2 authenticated security. Your hub or home automation softwarre needs to support this functionality as well.
- HUB COMPATIBILITY: This is an advanced Z-Wave device and it requires an updated Z-Wave hub to display correctly. All Zooz devices work best with the Z-Box Hub. It was tested to work well with Hubitat, Home Assistant (Z-Wave JS), HomeSeer and is compatible with SmartThings. This product is backed by US based support from Zooz, 7 days a week and a 5-year warranty once registered.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can this be used without physical switches and only for control with via z-wave?**
A: Yes, the device doesn't need a physical input (switch) and you can control is using Z-Wave commands only. Remember to check your local safety regulations to make sure an emergency physical wall control isn't required for the load you'd like to control with the Zooz device.

**Q: I need similar that can run from 12-18vdc power, so I can relay some aux devices that also run on 12-18vdc. Do they make it?**
A: I haven't found 1 for 18vdc
So I used it to turn a 110v ac in 18vdc out powersupply on and off
I know it's involved but it what I did

**Q: Will these work on GFCI circuits? I have 2 outdoor lights that are on ground fault circuits and all of the zwave switches I have tried trip the gfci.**
A: Yes, it can be installed on a circuit with a GFCI. I have this installed on an exterior circuit with GFCI and it works just fine.

**Q: Does it click when on/off? If yes, how loud?**
A: Any relay will make a sound when clicked so you will hear it when it's switched on and off. It's not too loud, just like your average 15A relay.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Super nice little thang
*by A***3 on March 30, 2023*

This little Z-Wave relay is a very well thought out and useful device. What makes this one nicer than the typical Z-Wave switch is the Sense input line. It makes this switch work with rather instead of almost any light switch application you may have. Was easy to install and get working.
