I've been rooting plants in the water it holds and always take it off to empty and refill. It came with sticky stuff but we don't use it because I didn't trust it to be secure enough. If you hang it with Command strips you'll be able to remove it easily, but again, filling with water makes it pretty heavy so do think about hanging it a bit more securely. **Q: Could I grow lettuce or something similar instead of a decorative plant?** A: As you see in the pics for these a Philodendron works well. The plants in the pics are examples of a real plant you can use, not the fake little plant that comes with it. Not all plants will grow well with their roots constantly in water. Visitors just stop and watch the fish in this gorgeous bowl. And... using lukewarm tap water, a Pothos cutting from one of my house plants that I rooted in water for a couple weeks, a pack of rinsed natural rocks from Dollar Tree, 10 drops of Right Start water conditioner and 5ml of Stress Zyme with my bi-weekly cleaning, I have managed to keep our carnival fish alive for almost two years in these bowls. I take the rocks out each time and rub them in my hands under warm water to keep them clean and algae free. This is my second bowl, as I dropped the first one while cleaning because my cat was trying to go for the fish in our mini cleaning tank. It was my clumsy error that it was dropped about 4 feet onto a hard tile floor. It was still usable but the lip around the edge wasn’t perfect anymore and it was bugging me, so I bought a replacement.
