They are fairly cheap-ish looking beads (painted plastic mostly, I think, some of the colors on their own would have looked slightly garish) - but I think for the price and intended use it's a great deal. It's not the kind of thing I'd put on for, say, a wedding, but it looks fun for everyday use or a friends' party. So, it's a good hair tie, but not exactly a jewelry piece, if that makes sense. It holds well, although my hair is curly so these generally tend to hold well.
