## Description

Aerogel Descriptions: Aerogel is a synthetic porous ultralight material derived from a gel, in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas. The result is a solid with extremely low density and lowthermal conductivity. Nicknames include frozen smoke, solid smoke, solid air, or blue smoke owing to its translucent nature and the way light scatters in the material. It feels like fragile expanded polystyrene to the touch. Aerogels can be made from a variety of chemical compounds. Aerogel was first created by Samuel Stephens Kistler in 1931, as a result of a bet with Charles Learned over who could replace the liquid in ''jellies'' with gas without causing shrinkage. Aerogels are produced by extracting the liquid component of a gel through supercritical drying. This allows the liquid to be slowly dried off without causing the solid matrix in the gel to collapse fromcapillary action, as would happen with conventional evaporation. The first aerogels were produced from silica gels. Kistler's later work involved aerogels based on alumina, chromia and tin dioxide. Carbonaerogels were first developed in the late 1980s. Review: Impressive - I bought several of these. I re-manufactured a soft-cooler from desertcart selected to accommodate these particular sample sheets. The cooler was conventionally insulated with generic foam from the factory. By slitting the cooler's exterior just under the zipper -- I trimmed and inserted these into the four sides and used the trimmings to fill out the bottom. I hand stitched the 'cut' and sealed with a PU adhesive. Camping; I pre-cooled to mod'ed cooler with ice in a bag. Placed 2 lbs of frozen ground beef, 2 lbs of frozen butter, 9 lbs of cold beef cuts, 5 lbs of prepared pork-belly, & 2 packages of bacon with a few odds and ends and closed the cooler. The cooler went into a re-use single layer of bubble plastic with Mylar on one side which was folded down as with a Christmas package. This went into a convenient sized desertcart box and off I went for 7 nights and 8 days, car-camping. I was impressively happy that it was cold enough until the morning of the 7th day whereupon I consolidated my few items into the coldest of the conventional plastic bodied -- filled with foam, full sized coolers with everyone else's stuff in it that was 're-charged' with bought ice. This turned the bargain soft-cooler into a stellar performer that weighs next to nothing, empty. It works great for 4-half gallon-ish packages of ice cream -- which I used for the 2023 July 4th party ( ~ 90ºF ). Of conventional insulators -- there is no "tremendous" difference in the insulating R-factors. The greatest advantage in the myriad of choices is in *how* the insulation is installed and unit price per square foot. "Ball-parking"; Aerogels are *roughly* 10X more effective as insulators than foams, natural, or stone/ceramic fibers, spun glass, various cellulosic options or repurposed garment fibers. A closed-wall vacuum insulator ( Dewers Flask/Thermos ) is *roughly* 10X more effective than Aerogels.
Review: Be Careful - I’m sure I missed it but be aware that you will need gloves and or a mask to use this. It’s a lot like fiberglass insulation. You don’t want to breath it or get it in your eyes or get it on your skin. It’s a great product. Just wanted to make everyone aware of safety precautions since I must’ve missed them.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is the R value of this material and does it contain any amount (at all) of fiberglass?  What % of actual Aerogel?**
A: It looked and felt like aerogel.  I compared it to 1/2" Solimide foam insulation and it performed almost twice as well.  We are insulating a small oven at 400°F.
Will definitely use aerogel again and are looking for larger sheets.  I did speak with a manufacturer who was surprised I found this material in small quantity at a good price.

**Q: Can I use this to fill air gap around a flue for a tankless water heater?**
A: Sorry- btw, *never* use synthetic foams as insulation in enclosed spaces or where it could possibly get hot enough to burn. Spray PE is excellent insulator applied correctly, but outgasses horrible things like formaldahyde and phosgene. For the number of times insulation gets put in (once) it's worth doing right.

**Q: Can you bend it, like wrapping aroumd a tube?**
A: There is a bend-radius value. If this is the Aspen Aerogel, bending it to 5=5" isn't a problem EXCEPT for how much dust it will liberate. For God's sake, encapsulate any pieces you use in garbage bag plastic and seal it. Do NOT shake it or re-open. Always wear N95 PPE AND Tyvek - trust me.

**Q: How flexible is the material?**
A: I've used this kind of insulation extensively in high altitude electronics. There is nothing better for R  value, this cannot burn or outgas, can never become flammable and can never absorb water/moisture. The drawbacks are becomes very dusty if you wrap it, bend it or even move it, the dust is bad like sand dust is (think silicosis, pulmonary edema). I strongly recommend a careful plan for what shapes are needed, how they'll be cut, how they'll be encapsulated before hand. The first half of the job is all of that and it's the most time consuming. It's difficult to cut - can only use things like tin snips which dull rapidly. Get a $150 self-sharpening power shear. For SURE wear surgical type gloves maybe two pair, N95 respirator or better, goggles or better face shield and tyvek suit. No joke.  Do NOT manipulate this stuff indoors. When you are done, immediately shower with LOTS of shampoo (dust is hydrophobic, which means practically impossible to get wet, so as difficult to wash off.)  I have installed hundreds of square feet of this stuff and when done right - there is nothing better, and nothing safer.

Don't handle this with bare hands. The mechanical properties are poor. It might be a very good insulator, but: a) It's not that light. b) Emits dust of unknown risk.
