The plastic ones inevitably break, leaving you to battle with the lid, trying to get some leverage to pry up the curved part that is firmly seated on the pail. When I saw this one, I knew I had to have it. It has since opened two of my buckets, one for ice melter and another for grass seed. It's heavier in your hand and it gives a better grip and contact with the pail. I hand it over my work bench in the garage and it stands out, so I can find it pretty quickly even when I haven't used it for a while.
