This ball is approximately 3" it works well to get into the back muscles, glutes, front shin, deltoids, lower back, quads, iliotibial bands. The ridges are more aggressive and a bit more painful than a smooth ball. But it really works!!! LAcross balls are amazing too but are not the same. a 5' version is also available and works amazing!! After finally making the deicision, i was glad that i got it. The quality is very well built and the design is thought out. I used it to roll it on my upper back, up to my neck, as i lay down on a mat, and it was a major relief. Before the massage, i felt like there was a knot in my neck because of how i slept, but the massage ball fixed that after one session. I did feel the stiffness in my neck a little bit, but i felt it going away. I also used it for my knee because of my injury and it helps a lot before workouts as i creep towards the age of 30.
