They are very smooth, and easy to read through. I haven't had any issues with smudges or variations in ink flow. It doesn't oversaturate pages with the ink. I have included some photos of pages I heavily highlighted in a thin-paged book for examples of bleed through (one of the photos has the page held up so the light shines through, and you can see there isn't perceptible bleed through in standard use). The colors are very aesthetic. I do think aa few of the pinky/purple colors are very similar, so it might be nice to see more variation on that end of the spectrum. I used the colors to color-code my notes and textbooks, and felt there was enough variety for me to set up a good system. Despite the square edges, I found them comfortable to grip.
