    Promising BUT not quite there

*by S***S on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 7, 2014*

The book starts well and seems promising, however for me it failed to grab my attention, stimulate my brain or offer enough challenges.I felt the theme and writing weakened in the middle of the book and definitely became repetitive, with a weak ending.I really liked Kira Peikoff's first novel and I intend to read a third one if published, however I was disappointed by this one, finding implausible characterization. Most of the time I felt annoyed by the key characters and found inconsistencies in their behaviours, such as Zoe being proposed as brave and strong whereas her main comments and actions were mostly whining, complaining and non appreciative of what was happening around her. Which in effect philosophically annoyed me as she was no where near as admirable as people claimed she was, which set off inconsistency in my thinking.I am not a scientist so cannot comment on the plausibility of the science. I did find it read to me mostly like dry researched facts, plonked into the novel, to back up the storyline, however that did interest me enough to self discover more post reading the novel.I'm not saying I didn't enjoy this novel, because I did, the overall theme is of human interest. I'm just saying at this time, with this specific novel I was disappointed - perhaps I expected too much of this 'promising' author?

Excellent second novel by Romantic writer, Mrs. Kira Peikoff-Beilis.

*by E***I on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 15, 2014*

Only a quick, brief review of this excellent novel as at this time I have only been able to enjoy the opening chapters. However, I do hope to extend this review at a future time with a fuller philosophical approach and critique. To the point, If you like Ayn Rand's novels or Agatha Christie's works you''ll enjoy this exciting novel by Mrs. Peikoff. Certainly, she has --after only two novels-- become a writer of note in the Romantic school of literature. In our real-life world of Obamacare and the medical bureacracy of Ezekial Emanuel, this book is a must read of rational self-defense. It is full of insight to those of us who are obligated to deal with American bureacracy in any from. Further, This is a serious read--not for the faint heart-- the opening violent chapter will cure anyone of thinking this is not serious literature. Certainly, this murderer could have been one of the comprachicos in Hugo's "The Man who Laughs". Again, any admirer of the Romantic school should put this on their Christmans list, buy list and wish list. Again, Don't buy it for others unless you are certain of their Romantic esthetics. With that noted, purchase it for the Romantic thrill ride that it is. You won't have to forgive yourself for doing so. Enjoy!

Gripping and suspenseful, but also makes you think

*by D***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 14, 2014*

It's rare to find a book that's an exciting page-turner, but also makes you think about a bigger issue. This book does exactly that! If you're a fan of medical mysteries (Michael Crichton, etc), then you'll definitely enjoy this one. It grabs you from the very beginning with a suspense-filled story that centers around a 20-year old girl who hasn't aged since she was 14. The plot twists and turns from there -- you won't want to put it down. Unlike some thrillers which are entertaining in the moment, but then quickly forgotten, this book stayed on my mind long after I finished it. I find myself wondering about one of the central ideas -- what if we discovered how to stop aging so that we could live for 200+ years? It may sound far-fetched at first, but it's not that crazy given how life expectancy has increased over time. Would it be a good thing, or would it lead to overcrowding and other problems? Definitely gives me something to think about...and makes me look forward to Kira's next book!
