When the wind blows from the east, we in Chicago and the north shore get warmer surface water that averages about 70 degrees F from July into early October. But if I swim for 45 minutes to an hour, I feel chilled, and this suit prevents that. It's not wet-suit material exactly but it is thick and well-fitting enough to keep a layer of warmed water next to your skin. It also keeps the sun off when you're on the beach, as it's long-sleeved and covers most of the thick.
