I cleaned the surface with rubbing alcohol before applying and BANG they work immediately and kept my 22 month grandson locked out of my kitchen cabinets immediately. I no longer have to run behind him and worry when he gets into the one under the kitchen sink where I keep my cleaning supplies. It took a while to figure out how to open and close, but it made me laugh when after 10 minutes, I figured it out....SO EASY. Just press the A tab and LIFT towards you. It snaps back quickly.
