Now, the same professional product is available for use on lawns and potted plants at home! Water has a high surface tension. This means water molecules attract each other and don’t want to be separated–this is why water forms droplets! However, this high surface tension prevents water from effectively infiltrating into hydrophobic soils (peat/clay) and results in water pooling on the surface or channeling through the path of least resistance in the soil profile. Both of these outcomes result in areas of the roots not receiving adequate irrigation. Surf Side 37 is a non-ionic surfactant that improves soil wettability by binding to the hydrophobic coating on soil particles and reducing the surface tension of water. This allows water and nutrients to easily penetrate through thatch/peat into the root zone where they can be utilized by the plant.
