It comes off. Already out of the box tuned for low SWR. I get around 10 miles on my unit in the thick Florida woods (very good) from my driveway and I run a Galaxy DX-959 and a decent power mic on a LEGAL CB mobile radio station. I have this great antenna mounted on my Toyota Corola Trunk which of course is a small car and get out very well with the truckers on the interstate and other local residents in my home area. Combined along with the Amazon Astatic PDC5 SWR/Wattage Meter matcher I get maximimum output (transmit power), Optimum SWR levels.
