Typically you will see faster growth and better yields in coco than in soil and it is virtually impossible to over-water it as it can hold up to 8 times more water than soil and 1000 times more air. The only drawback with it is that it contains virtually no available nutrients so you either need to regularly add fertilizer (coco specific ones are available, but not essential) or mix it in with something else, e.g. compost or manure as you suggest.My main use for coco is mixing it into my flower beds along with plenty of compost and organic manure. I used about 6 bags of it across the front and back garden along with about the same amount of manure and plenty of well rotted compost from my compost bins. I then just mixed it all together with a garden hoe to make sure the compost and manure were well mixed in with the coco to make sure plenty of nutrients are available throughout the beds. My plants are growing like wildfire now!Aside from the general improvement it makes to the soil, my main reason for using it is because next door's back garden is flagged which leads to a lot of water logging in my back garden in the wet Manchester winters. Since I started adding coco to my beds, water logging is no longer a problem as it the coco can suck up tons of it whilst still holding plenty of essential air for the plant roots. After a year or two the coco will rot down to virtually nothing, further improving the soil and adding some calcium and magnesium to the mix. Coco "holds onto" these nutrients to an extent so you may need to add bone meal and/or epsom salts if deficienies occur, or use one of the coco specific feeds which allow for this quirk.One final word of advice. It's well worth paying the extra for the bags of Canna coco as it has been thoroughly washed and therefore contains little salt. The cheaper coco blocks you can buy are full of salt and therefore need soaking and rinsing in a lot of water before you can use them or the high salt levels will kill off your plants in short order. I don't know about you but I have better uses for my bathtub! ;) **Q: Can I use this as substrate for my tortoise?** A: Yes you can. As long as it doesn’t have any fertiliser or other harmful ingredients, it should be safe for Tortoises. Sterilised coco coir or top soil is best. I use it to house my Tortoises in. I also use it for out side cat litter trays as it’s natural.
