Make sure you can easily breathe through the fabric, or look for a fabric that is listed as acoustically transparent. A cotton calico should be OK as long as it doesn't have any coating or a very tight weave.Another common option is to make acoustic wall panels, a thick wooden picture frame with the foam tiles sat inside then covered in a breathable fabric. **Q: I'm planning to build my own microphone isolation booth, main reason being my voice not to be heard by the neighbours. Makes phone calls and video calls online sound much nicer, even if only I can hear the difference. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Home recording *by R***R on 9 February 2012* I've been playing around with home recording, having transformed a bedroom into an occasional studio with a range of equipment and some MXL 603 microphones for acoustic guitar and vocal recording. Being a bedroom, it lacks the assured silence and acoustic dampening that would be ideal (having the curtains closed helps!). I looked into commercial microphone shields and acoustic booths but the cost seemed higher than I could justify. Being a fan of a bit of DIY, it struck me that, with some acoustic foam and a simple frame, I could create my own acoustic shield. There are a lot of different foam panels available and some are clearly more professional (and expensive) than others. These seemed very reasonably priced and the 12 inch (300mm) square size gave me a lot of flexibility in how I mounted them. The result? OK, so nobody is going to believe I achieved commercial studio standards but the panels are certainly doing their job. My home made acoustic booth, in combination with microphone shock mountings for ground isolation, is providing a very adequate shield and definitely improves the overall acoustic performance. Not bad for the price of the panels and a few wooden straps, hinges, screws and spray glue for mounting.
