Their use benefits from a steady hand and some force with a suitable hammer to punch out perfect circles. The punches are nicely manufactured for their relatively low cost (approx. a fiver) and will happily work over and over again as long as a soft wood base is used beneath the item being punched. If the tips dull over time they can be very carefully sharpened using a cutting stone etc. The only thing to be aware of is the sizes are approximate (in my case 5mm is actually 4.66mm, and 6 mm is 5.7mm etc.) and the material being punched must be capable of stretching to allow the thickness of the tools shaft to pass through when punching a hole. The larger diameter punches have quite thick shafts and force the material to stretch quite a lot. There are other style punches out there that are thinner (and likely much more expensive) but leather belts and rubber sheet etc. generally stretch without issue. I'm pleased with these punches for the price. Not only have I used my set for leather punching but have also punched through aluminium foil of the thickness of foil baking trays. Hope this helps. **Q: Can you use them to make a whole in 0.5mm thickness silver sheet?** A: Yes, use a hardwood block behind the silver sheet when punching out the hole . **Q: Will these cut through carpet** A: Probably, depending how thick the carpet is. It's affordable, tough, and after a bit of tweaking it does the job effortlessly. Out of the box I found it was struggling to cut through 1mm of rubber composite. This was easily fixed by sharpening the tool, to do this I used a dremel with a grinding bit and now it could cut through the material.
