You can plug a washing machine into the socket and the washing machine will work ok if the socket is connected to a 240vac supply. The socket is for out door use and must be used in conjunction with a 30mA RCD for safety. You would not use a washing machine out doors in the open. Do not put the socket in a washing machine. In answer to your question about fitting transformers into this electrical unit, unfortunately not the lid will not close. SORRY.What I have done is to purchase a large waterproof blank junction box and fitted it to a wooden post, fit an electrical extension lead depending on length and then you can plug in your transformer inside the junction box. Just remember to drill a couple of drain holes on the underside to let air in and condensation out, then just run your extension lead through to your 2 gang box. Hope I have not confused you to much. It feels far better made than some of the cheaper weatherproof sockets I have used before and once installed it gives confidence that it will cope with the British weather without any issues. The casing feels solid and durable with a sturdy lid that closes securely. The clear cover is useful because you can quickly see whether plugs are switched on without opening it every time. The large catches are easy to use even with wet hands or gardening gloves which is a nice touch. Installation was straightforward with clearly marked terminals and enough room inside to work comfortably with wiring. The multiple knockout options also made cable routing easier depending on where the supply cable comes from. Once mounted it sits firmly on the wall and does not feel flimsy or loose. I have used it outside through rain and it has remained completely reliable. The switches have a positive click and the socket cover seals properly around plugs when in use.
