Review: Superb speakers at a great price - I ordered these for use at work with my iMac, after reading some of the great reviews. On the day they were due to be delivered, for some reason I decided to read the negative ones and these worried me a bit. The two main criticisms seemed to be: a). a residual hum from the transformer, and b). distortion caused by a lack of structural integrity in the cases. Upon plugging them in, the first thing I listened for was that hum - nothing. The second thing was the distortion; bearing in mind I was trying them out with some heavy bass tracks, I was getting no distortion at all. The sound quality is superb for the price; these are powerful enough with their 50W to ensure you won't be wanting for volume or oomph when you need it. Even when playing something like Paper Bag by Ronnie Size (drum and bass) I couldn't get them to distort. The only conclusion I can draw regarding the criticisms is that the manufacturers must have read those and reacted by making improvements. As a former electronics engineer I know very well what transformer hum sounds like, and it simply isn't there. I also know what distortion sounds like and that isn't there either. By the way, i took another reviewer's advice and spent a little more for the 4.5 rather than the 3.5 and he was right - well worth it for the sound and punch you get. These are marketed as being monitors for a music studio but they are ideal as PC speakers if you want quality, rather than the generally rubbish sound you get from units aimed at the computer market. If you can afford 120 quid, get these, they are brilliant.

**Q: Does anyone know if the 5 is substantially better than the 4.5 as I prefer the smaller size and front panel volume control?**
A: Depends how much accuracy you need- i'd say the 4.5's are great for general listening-- really good - it just comes with a pleasing touch of detail--good for basic monitoring. The E5's are your more serious professional speakers-bigger dynamic range, more accurate mid and bass detail. I've used both and would not use the 4.5's for professional work but they do kick serious butt in terms of depth, clarity and power for such affordable and pleasantly sized boxes.
Neither will give you massive sub bass  - woofers are only 4.5 inch and 5 inch respectively- the smaller version has a bass response to around 80hz whereas I can get the E5 showing up at 35hz - still the bass they do produce is very clean and you can really tell what's going on with it even in complex pieces of work with multiple bass lines.
Again the E5's are better if you need to produce professional grade work.

**Q: Does it have an aux input**
A: Yes - two mini jacks on front of active speaker: one for aux-in, the other for headphones. These speakers are good value.

**Q: are these compatible with pioneer ddj200?**
A: Hi! Yes, you can connect the Eris E3.5 to the output from the phone, tablet, audio interface etc you are using with the DDJ 200.

**Q: Why do both left and right monitors work from the front aux input but when plugged into my laptop from the back rca input only the left monitor works?**
A: Presumably you are using two RCA plugs for left (white) and right (red) - try reversing them - if only the right channel works then your lead is faulty, if only the left channel works the right channel socket on the left speaker is faulty.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great PC speakers for the price IF you don't mind some hiss.

I spent a week looking into speaker tech to find out why these speakers gave a low-volume hiss no matter what I did. Power cleaners, interference, active and non-active speakers blah, blah, blah. The long and short of it is that these are ACTIVE speakers. All studio monitors are ACTIVEand as such they have some level of hiss. There's some out there that don't but actually trying to find them is a wild goose chase and I'm gonna die one day so i'm not gonna waste my time with that for now. You can buy Bookshelf Speakers which are PASSIVE and don't have this problem but that would require an amp to connect them to as well so the cost on average is more than Studio Monitors. Once I found out this is just a thing you have to deal with studio monitors, I accepted my fate. Because for £115 they sound pretty damn fantastic. And now that I'm no longer looking for that hiss truthfully I haven't noticed it in days. So yeah, pretty happy with the money, they have real presence and I get to enjoy some low-end that doesn't just shake the room but actually has some definition. BUT, if this is your first step outside of your generic "PC Speakers" realm and you're really sensitive to sound, beware hiss might be a problem for you.
