Would very much appreciate your views as I am only just starting out.** A: yes you can use them for intricate work but once you have done the main sharpening you can keep a very fine edge with a small piece of wet and dry sandpaper. This will save you actually sharpening away valuable pencil until the lead is so far down you have to use the sharpener. If you are doing multiple layers, you tend to get a waxy build up, therefore you can use a solvent to spread the colour you have already used, which makes it very rich but also allows you to layer even more colours on top. Are the inserts quite durable or do the pencils need to be put into another kind of holder to prevent them spilling?** A: The 3 trays inside are plastic, but covered in something that makes them feel like velvet. The pencils each have their own little groove in the inner boxes so they will not spill around inside. There are elastic band grips on either side to ease lifting each layer out of the box and on to a table. I have transported mine several times and this is not a problem. Would make sure that the tips of the pencils were pointing upwards during transport to prevent breaking and perhaps use an elastic around the case itself to ensure that the lid does not pop open. Saying that, mine never has but I carry mine in a laptop type case so there is ample pressure to ensure it stays closed. I’ve tried using other makes but always come back to these. The colour range is extensive and they are a joy to use. After using Faber pencils I don’t want to use any other. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ excellent oil base pencils *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 27 April 2019* I had never tried these pencils before but i was well impressed with them. They have a butter like texture but at the same time are not super soft so don't wear down quickly. You don't have to keep sharpening them which obviously will make the pencils last much longer than some other brands i have. You can keep adding layers allday and they blend really well and mix well with water colour pencils and standard colour pencils. These are an oil based pencil which is what gives them the buttery smooth texture i suspect. They have a fab sheen to them. The colours i received in this set are great and i am especially pleased with the amount of different tones of the colours provided in this size set.I think these are really worth the price and found the price i paid was very competitive and gave me a good deal. Hopefully they wont go up in price.The picture was coloured in using these polychromos with some metallic pencils.
