They are quite soft and delicate leads and I have experienced no problems. I also use fabric marker pencils which are also soft and very inclined to be difficult to sharpen - again no problems. **Q: Does it work on charcoal pencils?** A: YES **Q: How is it powered** A: It’s not an electric pencil sharpener. It’s a 3 in 1 pencil sharpener. So, it works like an ordinary one where you have to turn the pencil to sharpen it. There are two sizes for graphic pencils: big & small and a hole for coloured pencils. It’s very good and would recommend it. People have said its a great sharpener. For me it's not bad, it does what it is supposed to.
