Approx one inch deep. I hang mine via a string attached to a hook in the ceiling beam. I drape the bag over a handled sieve, sitting on the bowl, and pour the juice through the bag and sieve. Then once the majority of the juice has run out, suspend the bag and let it drip into the bowl overnight. That way there is less strain on the bag and it will last longer. Hope this helps. **Q: would these do for putting mince meat into whilst sitting in a pot of mulled wine just so the scent is released?** A: Bear in mind the suet from the mincemeat will also dissolve (in the alcohol). On the other hand, maybe the world is crying out for meat fat-based booze... **Q: How fine a mesh this is? (I need something that'll clear as well as 50 microne paint strainer...)** A: This is the cheaper one of two sorts I bought to strain fruit juice to make jam. It isn't very strong and couldn't take the weight of a couple of pounds of fruit. I found a funnel shaped mesh coffee grounds strainer far more efficient as it had a finer mesh. This mesh is similar to that of a net curtain. **Q: Can this be used in the pan when bringing the fruit to the boil?** A: Hi there, I haven't actually boiled the bag in the pan with the fruit! When wanting to make jam that has no seeds in eg blackberry and apple or summer fruits jelly I boil up the fruit in the pan with the requisite amount of sugar, check the setting point has been reached then pour the contents of the pan through the bag so the liquid drips through into a receptacle such as a large pyrex bowl. To get the maximum amount of sieved pulp when it looks as if it is stopping to drip I squeeze the bag and usually get a bit more pulp through the strainer I then put what has been sieved into sterilised jars. Maybe the manufacturer can advise whether they think the bag witl survive being boiled with the fruit in the pan. I'm afraid I can't answer that since I haven't tried it.
