Review: This Brace has saved my Knee after 20 years of Injuries - I am 42 and suffered a severe ACL tear and reconstruction aged 23. I then suffered a serious cartilage meniscus tear some years ago which required surgery. My right knee has always been unstable since and I have worn hinged knee braces for ca. 20 years and have played cricket at a high level since. This summer whilst playing cricket my knee totally broke down with inability to bend down, run or move comfortably. I visited one of the top knee surgeons in Ireland and after an MRI was told I had no cartilage left at all and had advanced severe athritis. I was told a new knee would be required but that I was too young for one! Also I was told that an offloader brace (ie Donjoy) would not be suitable as I had severe athritis on both sides of my right knee. So after a couple of weeks of shock... upset.... frustration and an utter sense of helplessness.. I started to take back control. My first stop was to research a suitable high end brace. I can honestly say that since wearing the McDavid brace my knee has been transformed. No longer do I fear stairs... I can walk the dog again and my knee never hyperextends nor do I constantly fear the knee rolling over itself. I have also got arch insoles for my shoes and now take little if any painkillers. Before the brace I was taking Difene most of the time to get through the day. I wear the brace from morning til night everyday and would you believe I sometimes forget to put it on in the morning so much better is my knee. But I put it on straight away. It is comfortable... sturdy...well made and although its shape can be seen through jeans or a suit.. it is far better than hobbling around or facing the immediate prospect of an artificial knee at 42. What the future holds I don't know but I can say with all sincerity that for someone who has had serious knee issues most of my adult life, three months of using this McDavid knee brace has already transformed my day to day life. I have also bought a Neurotech Kneehab tens machine for my knee which is vital to make sure that the thigh quadraceps muscles strengthen as wearing a brace all the time can lead to muscle wastage as you stop using the stabilising quadracep muscles. I may have bought myself maybe another 10 to 20 years of use of what was a totally defunct knee and I am happy again and do not have the daily pain and frustration I was experiencing !!!! I would recommend this brace to anyone.
Review: Ironically this may be good as I was right at the edge of XLarge ... - Size is an issue. I bought two of these from different suppliers both supposedly the same size. One came from the US and I had to pay customs charge of £11.02 extra. The US one was smaller than the UK XXL . Ironically this may be good as I was right at the edge of XLarge and XXLarge. The tight one is a wee bit tight but may slacken in time to give a good snug fit, my bigger one felt good at start but has slackened as I have been loosing weight and item loosens a bit with time. Good points - The pressure of the neoprene has a nice effect on my pain from my knee. When I started wearing it I thought my knee was improving very quickly only to find out when I removed my brace this was partly down to the effect my brace was having. Every night/physiotherapy session when I remove it I am reminded that it's worse than it seems with the knee brace on. All is good quality which I would hope at this price! Hinge may provide some support but seems a bit gimmicky, they come out easy if you want to hand wash neoprene. All in all very comforting and I'm happy with them, just make sure size wise and where there coming from.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does it fit either knee ??.. can't see an option for left or right.**
A: Ok great. I use an knee brace when I need complete support. But it's not comfortable for less taxing sport. I'm hoping this will do the trick. It's lateral movement that I need to control

**Q: Is Xxl same as 2xl**
A: No idea - best go to the Mc David website like I did - and measure your knee then work out which size is best fore yourself.

**Q: how do you size this knee brace?**
A: I think I agree with most of the previous answers ie measure around your knee several times, take the average, check the size chart and hope for the best. A more accurate way might be to sit on a chair with the straight leg resting on a stool/chair/puffee(if they still exist) and perhaps have someone else take the measurement(s). As with anything like this there is no substitute for trying before you buy, so if you're fortunate enough to have a Sports shop/Physio/Osteopath etc nearby who stocks them you need to pop along. If your measurement is dead on a size changeover or if your knee swells during the day, it's probably best to err on the Large side as it is generally easier to marginally overtighten a slightly too big item than it is to work around something that cuts into you. Hope this is of some use and best of luck.

**Q: I want to order XL but there is two different prices with this, one with the inches on and one without? Which do I go for?**
A: There's £20 in it so worth the risk in taking in the cheaper one. The cheaper one is sold by Amazon. What's their return policy? I think they'll be the same product. Check the Mcdavid web site. If you are borderline size, go for the smaller one. I'm borderline. I went for a L my wife has a M. I would have been marginally better with the M.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can walk for longer and feel support up hills
*by M***H on 16 November 2012*

I have arthritis in 1 knee bought on by an bably broken leg at age 16 (I am now 47) I've recently seen a surgeon who said I will need a new knee in 3 - 5 years so I need to keep the old one as mobile as possible but I was finding walking more & more painful. I bought a cheaper knee support, it kept the knee warm which does help but no real support and it was itchy. This one really does support the knee, you really feel it walking up hills and stairs, it is comfortable and I can tighten it to give extra support. I had to buy XXL as my knee is usually very swollen and since wearing it the swelling has gone down a little. I have had it for a few weeks now, I don't wear it all the time as this is not recomended but do wear it when I need to walk any distance, my school run is 2 miles up and down steep hills, I was shopping for 5 hours yeaterday, I would have had to give up sooner without it. It is a bit 'Robo Cop' cool for a man but not elegant with a skirt, I am a lady, I either wear it underneath wide leg trousers on on top of closer fitting ones. If you had the legs for it it would be good over leggings. I would love a skin tone one to wear with a dress but appart from that no complaints. Well worth the money. I also bought a sleeping knee support from boots yesterday, thats good too, I had to have a pillow under my knee to sleep but this has just enough cushioning under and side of the knee so now I don't need to keep moving the pillow as I sleep.
