If you are not experienced just use an 8mm or 10mm so that there is sufficient clearance for the key to by inserted and turn. I also used escutcheon plates to match which made the job look really nice. **Q: Can this lock be used externally?** A: The lock is not waterproof so would probably go rusty if exposed to the elements. **Q: I bought this lock to replace an identical one that was vandalised - and my old key works the new lock - how unique are the keys exactly?** A: Right, this is not a straightforward answer so apologies in advance for the Complete Works of William Shakespeare. The locks are not intended as primary security (though they are excellent), they will not satisfy an insurance company in the event of a claim (needs to be 5 lever mortice), the keys do tend to be similar enough so they will work on other locks though not necessarily generic. The same could be said of all locks, there is sufficient similarity in the tumbler arrangement for another key to open the lock. I fitted this type of lock in a period property for a customer and backed it up with tower bolts.
