I think it says somewhere 3 inches and I would say that's about right. I've had many push mowers over the years and this is one of the best. The handle stands over and above the mower in the shed, so really doesn't take up much room. I don't bother with the grass box, I leave the clippings on the lawn to mulch it. **Q: will this mow a steep slope.Thanks** A: In all honesty, I have never had to use mine for a steep slope, and also, it would depend on how steep the slope is. Being over 50, fat and needing more exercise, a little manual mower seemed just the job. It was very easy to assemble, and works well. The first cut of the year, I set the mower as high as it would go and as the grass was 3 inches long, and longer in places it was bloody hard going, some tufts not cutting at all. The second go round was actually fairly easy. The grass box being at the front gets in the way quite often and only collects effectively if you can move at a good speed. I'd have bought the larger Webb machine for the higher cut, but at twice the weight I just couldn't manage it round my multi-level and sloping garden.
