Review: Excellent value trickle charger, works perfectly! - I already own a CTEK MXS 5.0 trickle charger, which I use on my wife's vehicle. After my 318D AGM battery gave up the ghost decently- due to lack of use during the pandemic as I work from home - and was replaced, I started shopping around for a cheaper trickle charger. The CTEK is excellent, but at around £60 I couldn't afford another one. I came cross this MayPole charger quite by accident, saw the good reviews and decided to give it a go. On opening the package, I was very impressed with the unit itself as well as the manual which was in very clear English. The unit looked and felt like a high quality product. The clear backlit display with the digital display of the charging voltage is a welcome feature (the CTEK has only LEDs). The unit comes with both crocodile clip and ring terminals (if you want a semi-permanent solution), and connects to the lead from the unit via a standard SAE connector (again a welcome change from the CTEK which uses it's own proprietary connector). I plugged it in, and given my AGM battery was relatively well charged to start with, it started charging at 'Stage 2' and within a few hours transitioned to the 'Stage 3' or float phase, with a float voltage of 13.8V being maintained consistently throughout (exactly as recommended for float charging of 6-cell AGM batteries). It's been rock solid since I plugged it in a week ago. I really don't see a difference between this MayPole and the CTEK chargers, except this one is about a third in price. Highly recommended. I wish I had come across this before I bought my CTEK. On another note, don't let your AGM battery lose charge - as they say it's next to impossible to recover these batteries once they've lost their charge beyond a certain threshold.

**Q: when i  press the mode button nothing happens, iwas looking for winter mode , it doesnt come up, it just showws a car is it working correctly**
A: With a 12v battery already connected, as soon as you the plug the charger into the mains, the charger first analysis the battery before then making it's own most appropriate charging program selection and the display changes to show battery voltage. You need to press the MODE button within those initial few seconds if you wish to over-ride the automatic selection and manually select one of the following three options:1) slow charge for small or motorbike battery at 0.8A/14.4volts - the motorbike symbol is displayed2) normal charge for car or leisure battery at 3.8A/14.4 volts - the car symbol is displayed3) winter mode for car or leisure battery at 3.8A/14.8 volts - the snowflake symbol is displayed.Once a program has been selected/started the MODE button becomes disabled, so you only have that initial period of time to manually change the program setting. Otherwise, disconnect the charger from the mains and reconnect it again after a few seconds to restart and change the selection. If you do not press the MODE button to manually make a selection, the charger automatically selects the most appropriate setting: If mains power should be interrupted, this feature ensures the charger restarts and reselects the right setting - useful for vehicles and boats in long-term storage where the mains can often be temporarily disconnected. There is no winter setting for 6v batteries.

**Q: Can u use an extension lead with this item as the leads are not long enough to reach from plug**
A: Hi, yes you can either use a mains extension lead or you can buy extension leads fir the 12v side of the unit, the red and black wires. There often one listed alongside the charger listing.
I use an ordinary mains extension lead which reaches just under my car, then I’ve got one of those waterproof boxes which you get for outdoor Christmas lights, and I put the mains plug AND the charger unit inside that to keep it all waterproof. The charger is great and does not get hot so is fine inside the box. I also use a mains rcd plug at the mains just to be sure.
Overall, if you’ve got a shed with power in it it’s probably best to plug the charger inside there and buy the red and black 12v extension, you can get quite long ones if you can’t get the car near the shed or garage.

**Q: This charger matches almost all the requirements but it does not mention whether it is suitable for a 650A. Also, could I extend the cable myself?**
A: Hi
I have a Jaguar XF sport and recently fitted a 900amp battery. I have permanently wired the trickle charger cables in and extended the charging cable so I can trickle charge the battery without lifting the covers in the boot. The jag is quite power hungry when sat and not used for a while. This is a great cheap solution. I intend to do the same with my other car by buying a fused lead which are quite cheap.   Self solder joints for the cable.

**Q: Is this suitable for a battery which requires "voltage limited charging" and has a stop / start system (Golf BlueMotion)?**
A: I have an Audi A3 saloon 1.4 turbo petrol with stop/start,2014 reg . I've used it a couple of times  and it seems to detect the type of battery and charges it fine. As far as your car is concerned I wouldn't want to comment. Best ask VW or the battery manufacturer.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ BEST CHARGER I'VE EVER HAD

This must be the 5th charger I have bought. Okay, you would expect them to get better over the years....but this is perfect. It has a clear, digital indicator...it shows your battery strength...it can give a full charge or a trickle...and it can be used 'normally' with crocodile clips OR wired in. I wanted to be able to charge two cars...a Smart where the battery is very tricky to get to (its under the passenger footwell so the carpet has to be stripped back to get to the battery) and a Mercedes 220 where it's under the bonnet - but tight. This charger comes with two leads. One can be permanently wired in with a neat/safe socket left tucked away, ready for use. The other lead has quality, compact crocodiles. If you have a car where you want to wire the lead permanently to the battery....one at a time, you undo the nuts which loosening the existing battery leads, AND MAKING SURE that the positive (red) lead cannot touch any metal other than the positive battery terminal. Put the washer-sized connector over the exposed screw (making sure you connect red to red, black to black) and then FULLY tighten each nut back up. In some cars, my Smart included, this will be a fiddly job....you may need a flexible socket set. And you can very easily lose the nuts as you screw them off the battery terminals. Do the job slowly and in good light. Once connected up, gently trail the extension (which is about 35 cms long) to a point where your charger will connect to it as and when you want to charge the battery. Normally, the lead will be tucked neatly away with the charger only taken to the car when a charge is needed. The alternative method of connection is the usual crocodile. Again, there has been some thought. Modern engine bays can be very cluttered...these clips are small enough to go neatly on the battery terminal or have the negative fastened to a nearby earthing point. This is a lovely, practical product. Whoever created it deserves a medal.
