Once i removed the light unit from the globe I struggled then to pull the bulb out of the white base. However I soon found out that the white base is part of the bulb and in fact you need to screw the whole unit out. Replace with any small edison screw bulb when done **Q: Is this battery operated or mains?** A: This is a mains operated globe. It't got little pictures on relevant locations as well to assist kids in associating monuments and animals in specific geographic locations. My son uses it as his bed side lamp. **Q: is bulb repacement easy to obtain and fit please** A: Yes easy to fit and instructions on what spec of bulb is and how to fit them is supplied with each globe **Q: does it come with a bulb?** A: Yes... But like many said on here it blows in no time.Problem is the bulb is halogen and the globe is enclosed hence the heat knocks the bulb out within a few days. I wants this as a nightlight for my sons bedroom so this wasn't ideal. instead I replaced it with an led light from the supermarket... A screw in golf ball style. To get the light into the lightfitting you'll need to cut off the plastic globe covering the actual led then squeeze it in (the plastic is purely cosmetic to diffuse the light and its removal won't effect it one bit, besides your not going to see it when everything Is put back together.) It's a little tricky but well worth it. He enjoys talking about where his favourite animals live in the world before he falls asleep at night. We also have friends and family in Scotland, Spain, Italy, Australia, China and the USA, so this has helped him understand how far away from us they are.We use it as the only light in his room at bedtime and it gives off enough soft light to read by as well as providing a great distraction to allow me to leave him - "you look at your globe and i'll be back to check on you in 10 minutes" He's always asleep when I go back in. Because the bulb is so well hidden we can have this right on his bedside table knowing he wont burn himself on it.Its not the greatest in terms that its quite rudimentary - the diagrams are more like illustrations, Wales is a bit squished, and it really only covers the basic animals.Its also a bit difficult to spin but ours may just need oiling or something.Overall a great item for the younger child.
